New pain block technique could cut opioid use after back surgery

NCT ID NCT06725680

First seen Nov 19, 2025 · Last updated May 22, 2026 · Updated 22 times

Summary

This study tested two different nerve blocks (retrolaminar block and erector spinae plane block) to provide pain relief without opioids after lumbar disc surgery. 90 adults undergoing back surgery were randomly assigned to one of the two blocks. The goal was to see which block helped patients wake up faster, need less extra pain medicine, and leave the recovery room sooner.
