New pain block methods could cut opioid use after back surgery

Summary

This study tested two types of nerve blocks (retrolaminar and erector spinae plane) to manage pain without opioids after lumbar disc surgery. 90 adults undergoing back surgery received one of the two blocks. The goal was to see which block delays the need for pain medicine and speeds up recovery. Results could help patients recover more comfortably with fewer side effects.
