Womb wash test could spot ovarian cancer before it spreads
NCT ID NCT04794322
First seen Jun 24, 2026 · Last updated Jun 24, 2026
Summary
This study is testing a new way to detect ovarian cancer earlier by looking at DNA from a womb wash and proteins in the blood. Researchers will collect samples from 250 women before surgery for a suspected ovarian mass or as a preventive measure. After surgery, they'll check if the test can tell apart those with cancer from those with benign disease. If it works, it might lead to a screening test that catches ovarian cancer sooner and saves lives.

What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Uterine lavage (womb wash) and blood sample analysis
What this could lead to
If successful, this could lead to a simple test that catches ovarian cancer earlier, when it's more treatable, and may reduce deaths from the disease.
What could go wrong
This is an early-phase biomarker study, not a treatment trial. The test may not work as hoped in real-world screening, and a new study would be needed to confirm its effectiveness in women without symptoms.
Conditions
