Can a simple exercise program keep aging brains and bodies steady?
NCT ID NCT07831174
First seen Sep 21, 2026 · Last updated Sep 21, 2026
Summary
Researchers test whether an eight-week modified Otago exercise program can improve thinking skills and balance in community-dwelling older adults. The trial enrolls 87 participants aged 65 and older who can walk at least ten meters. Half receive the exercise program plus their daily routine, while the other half continue only their daily routine. The study measures changes in cognitive function, dynamic balance, mental well-being, and single-leg stance.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only, not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- Otago exercise program
- What this could lead to
- If it works, this could offer a low-cost, accessible way for older adults to maintain thinking skills and balance, potentially reducing fall risk.
- What could go wrong
- The trial is small and short, so any benefits may be modest or fade without continued exercise. Participants must be able to walk and have no major neurological or orthopedic problems, so results may not apply to frailer older adults.
