New combo aims to save rectum from surgery in rectal cancer patients

Summary

This early-phase study tests whether a short course of radiation followed by chemotherapy can shrink advanced rectal tumors enough to avoid surgery. About 25 people with stage II or III rectal cancer will receive this treatment. The goal is to preserve the rectum and improve quality of life while keeping the cancer under control.
