Breath analysis could revolutionize ICU nutrition

NCT ID NCT07457554

First seen Mar 19, 2026 · Last updated May 23, 2026 · Updated 12 times

Summary

This study tests whether using a breath measure called respiratory quotient (RQ) can help doctors give the right amount of calories to ICU patients on breathing machines. About 200 adults will be randomly assigned to standard nutrition care or care that also adjusts food based on RQ. The goal is to see if this approach improves survival, reduces time on a ventilator, and shortens hospital stays.
