Which eye scan best guides wet AMD treatment? new study compares OCT and OCT-A
NCT ID NCT02868086
First seen Jan 11, 2026 · Last updated Jun 23, 2026 · Updated 31 times
Summary
This completed study looked at two different imaging methods—standard OCT B-scans and newer OCT angiography—to monitor wet age-related macular degeneration (AMD) in 68 patients. The goal was to see if using OCT angiography changed how often patients received anti-VEGF injections and affected their vision. The study compared the two monitoring strategies to find which might better guide treatment timing.

What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
What this could lead to
If successful, this could help doctors choose the best imaging method to monitor wet AMD and decide when to give anti-VEGF injections, potentially preserving vision.
What could go wrong
This is a small, completed study (68 people) comparing two imaging techniques, not testing a new treatment. Results may not change standard practice without larger trials.
