Swallow a sponge, skip the scope: new test could revolutionize esophageal cancer screening

NCT ID NCT06071845

First seen Jan 11, 2026 · Last updated May 25, 2026 · Updated 26 times

Summary

This study tests a new, less invasive way to screen for Barrett's esophagus, a condition that can lead to esophageal cancer. Instead of using a long tube with a camera (endoscopy), participants swallow a small sponge on a string that collects cells from the esophagus. The collected cells are then tested for markers of Barrett's esophagus. The goal is to see if this simple, low-cost method is accurate enough to replace endoscopy for initial screening, making it easier for more at-risk people to get tested.
