Shock and sweat: new combo therapy targets muscle loss in liver patients

NCT ID NCT07162636

First seen Nov 01, 2025 · Last updated May 23, 2026 · Updated 25 times

Summary

This study tests whether adding neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES) to resistance exercises can improve muscle strength and physical function in hospitalized adults aged 47–70 with alcoholic liver cirrhosis and sarcopenia (muscle loss). Participants will be randomly assigned to receive either NMES+exercise or exercise alone, six times per week during their hospital stay. The goal is to see if the combined approach leads to better muscle strength and fewer hospital readmissions.
