New test and early treatment aim to save babies from sickle cell disease

NCT ID NCT07488520

Summary

This study aims to see if using a new, portable screening device to find sickle cell disease in newborns, followed by starting a full package of early care, can improve health outcomes for babies. Researchers will enroll 120 babies in Côte d'Ivoire, screen them, and provide treatments like preventive antibiotics, malaria drugs, and a medication called hydroxyurea to those who test positive. They will track the babies' health for over three years to see if this approach reduces hospital visits, serious complications, and deaths from the disease.
