Tiny blood samples, big clues: new study maps brain health in preterm newborns
NCT ID NCT07159555
First seen Nov 01, 2025 · Last updated May 22, 2026 · Updated 27 times
Summary
This study looks at a protein called neurofilament in the blood of healthy late preterm babies (born 34-37 weeks). High levels of this protein can signal nerve damage, but normal levels for preterm infants are unknown. Researchers will collect small extra blood samples during routine tests from 15 babies to create a reference range. This will help doctors better interpret these markers in future studies of diseases like spinal muscular atrophy.
