Can a Contrast-Free MRI match ultrasound for spotting Stroke-Causing blockages?
NCT ID NCT07756775
First seen Aug 11, 2026 · Last updated Aug 12, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study looks at 200 adults who have had an ischemic stroke or transient ischemic attack (TIA). Each participant will receive two types of imaging: a non-contrast magnetic resonance angiography (NC-MRA) and a carotid Doppler ultrasound. The goal is to see how well these two methods agree in detecting and grading narrowing of the carotid arteries, which is a major cause of stroke. The findings could help doctors choose the best imaging approach for evaluating stroke patients.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only, not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- Non-contrast magnetic resonance angiography (NC-MRA) and carotid Doppler ultrasonography
- What this could lead to
- If NC-MRA proves as good as or better than carotid Doppler, it could become a preferred, safer imaging option for evaluating stroke patients, potentially improving diagnosis and treatment planning.
- What could go wrong
- This is an observational study, so it won't prove which method is better for patient outcomes. Results may not apply to all stroke patients, and NC-MRA may not be feasible for everyone due to MRI contraindications.
