New hope for liver failure patients: early drug may stop fluid buildup and kidney damage

NCT ID NCT07422948

First seen Feb 23, 2026 · Last updated May 20, 2026 · Updated 11 times

Summary

This study tests whether starting the drug midodrine early can help control ascites (fluid buildup in the belly) and prevent kidney complications in people with acute-on-chronic liver failure. About 113 adults with moderate to severe ascites will receive either midodrine plus standard care or standard care alone. The goal is to see if more patients become free of ascites by day 28 and avoid serious kidney problems.
