Gut bacteria in the ICU: a clue to Long-Term recovery?
NCT ID NCT04552834
First seen Jan 06, 2026 · Last updated Jun 17, 2026 · Updated 26 times
Summary
This study tracks 500 adults admitted to the intensive care unit to see how their microbiome (the community of bacteria in the body) changes during critical illness. Researchers will also look at whether these changes are linked to outcomes like death, length of hospital stay, and daily functioning months later. The goal is to better understand the role of the microbiome in recovery, not to test a new treatment.
