Peer-Led diabetes support shows promise for older black men
NCT ID NCT05370781
First seen Jun 24, 2026 · Last updated Aug 07, 2026 · Updated 2 times
Summary
This pilot study tests whether having older Black men with diabetes lead support groups can help other older Black men better manage their type 2 diabetes. All 48 participants receive standard diabetes education, and half also get 6 months of monthly peer-led support sessions. The study tracks changes in blood sugar, medication adherence, and quality of life over 15 months.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only, not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- peer-led diabetes self-management support sessions
- What this could lead to
- If successful, this approach could improve diabetes control and retention in studies for older Black men, pointing toward better community-based diabetes care.
- What could go wrong
- This is a small pilot study (48 participants) with no control group for the peer support component, so results may not apply broadly. The intervention is delivered via Zoom, which may limit engagement.

Inclusion Criteria: * Black/African American males, age 21 years or older with diagnosis of T2D for six months, transportation to attend program activities, under the care of a physician for diabetes, and willing to attend group delivered sessions. Exclusion Criteria: * We considered restricting eligibility to a higher-risk population of participants with A1c ≥ 8%. Preliminary data suggest that over 50% of the proposed study sample will have an A1c ≥ 8%. Focusing on all older Black men with T2D allows us to cast a wide net for secondary prevention and public health impact.
