New PET tracer spots hidden thyroid cancer

NCT ID NCT02856347

First seen Nov 18, 2025 · Last updated Jun 23, 2026 · Updated 30 times

Summary

This study tested a special radioactive tracer called 18F-DOPA for PET scans in 24 patients with medullary thyroid cancer who had high levels of a tumor marker after surgery. The goal was to see if this new scan could find remaining cancer in lymph nodes better than standard imaging. The results were compared to biopsy or follow-up to see how accurate the tracer was.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

18F-DOPA (a radioactive tracer for PET scans)

What this could lead to

If successful, this imaging method could help doctors more accurately locate residual medullary thyroid cancer after surgery, guiding better treatment decisions.

What could go wrong

This is a small, completed study with only 24 participants. The tracer may not prove more effective than standard imaging, and results may not apply to all patients.

Conditions
