First seen Nov 01, 2025 · Last updated Jun 20, 2026 · Updated 33 times
Summary
This study tested whether back massage given three times on the first day after open heart surgery could help patients with pain, sleep quality, and stress (measured by cortisol levels). 96 adults who had elective open heart surgery took part. Researchers compared those who received the massage to those who got usual care. The goal was to see if this simple, drug-free approach could improve recovery.

What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
back massage
What this could lead to
If it works, this could point toward a simple, drug-free way to help heart surgery patients feel better and sleep more soundly after their operation.
What could go wrong
This is a small, completed study with no phase, so results are preliminary. The effect may be modest or not apply to all patients, and massage cannot replace standard medical care.
