New combo attack on liver cancer: radiation plus immunotherapy before surgery
NCT ID NCT05701488
First seen Nov 01, 2025 · Last updated Jun 20, 2026 · Updated 33 times
Summary
This early-phase trial is testing whether combining internal radiation (SIRT) with two immunotherapy drugs (durvalumab and tremelimumab) is safe and tolerable for people with liver cancer that can be surgically removed. The 20 participants will receive the combination before their scheduled surgery. The goal is to see if this approach can shrink tumors and improve outcomes without causing unacceptable side effects.

What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Durvalumab, Tremelimumab, and Yttrium-90 radioactive microspheres (SIRT)
What this could lead to
If successful, this could point toward a safer and more effective way to shrink liver tumors before surgery, potentially improving outcomes for patients with resectable liver cancer.
What could go wrong
This is a very early phase 1 trial with only 20 participants, so results may not apply to all patients. The combination of radiation and immunotherapy can cause serious side effects, and it is not yet known if it will improve long-term survival.
