Could a simple numbing drug replace opioids after liver surgery?
NCT ID NCT07590830
First seen May 18, 2026 · Last updated May 18, 2026
Summary
This study looks at whether giving lidocaine (a numbing medicine) through a vein during and after liver surgery can lower the chance of opioid-related side effects like nausea, vomiting, and breathing problems. About 312 adults having planned open liver surgery will be randomly assigned to receive either lidocaine or a placebo (salt water) alongside standard pain care. The goal is to see if lidocaine helps patients recover with fewer side effects and less need for strong painkillers.
