Heart failure patients may finally ditch thirsty fluid rules
NCT ID NCT05931614
First seen Mar 05, 2026 · Last updated Jun 22, 2026 · Updated 16 times
Summary
This study tests whether heart failure patients can safely drink as much fluid as they want instead of restricting it. Researchers will compare lung congestion, blood markers, quality of life, and hospital readmissions in 326 participants over time. The goal is to see if liberal drinking is at least as safe as restriction, while potentially reducing thirst and improving daily life.

What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
free fluid intake (behavioural intervention)
What this could lead to
If successful, this could show that heart failure patients can drink freely without worsening their condition, improving comfort and quality of life.
What could go wrong
This is a relatively small, early-stage trial (326 participants) and may not prove safety definitively. Results may not apply to all heart failure patients, especially those with severe kidney issues.
