NCT ID NCT06868719

First seen Oct 31, 2025 · Last updated Jun 23, 2026 · Updated 31 times

Summary

This study tests whether taking a ketone supplement can prevent the negative health effects of eating too much salt in adults aged 60-85. Participants will follow a controlled diet with either low or high salt, plus either a ketone supplement or a placebo, for ten days. Researchers will measure changes in blood pressure, blood vessel function, and kidney health to see if ketones offer protection.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

ketone supplement (beta-hydroxybutyrate, or β-OHB)

What this could lead to

If it works, this could point toward a simple supplement to help older adults counteract the negative effects of a high-salt diet on blood pressure and kidney health.

What could go wrong

This is a small, early-stage pilot study with only 35 participants over 10 days. Results may not apply to everyone, and the supplement may not work as well in humans as it did in rodents.
