Could a single shot of ketamine stop suicidal thoughts in the ER?

NCT ID NCT04640636

First seen May 28, 2026 · Last updated Jun 17, 2026 · Updated 7 times

Summary

This study aimed to see if a single injection of ketamine could quickly reduce suicidal thoughts in depressed patients visiting the emergency room. About 90 adults with severe depression and active suicidal thoughts were to receive either ketamine or a sedative called midazolam. The goal was to find a fast, easy-to-use treatment that busy ER doctors could give. However, the study is currently paused due to a broader research halt at the main study site.
