Could ketamine be the key to safer ICU sedation?

NCT ID NCT06767358

First seen Oct 31, 2025 · Last updated May 21, 2026 · Updated 30 times

Summary

This study tests whether adding ketamine to standard sedation helps ICU patients on breathing machines. Ketamine treats both pain and anxiety, potentially reducing side effects like confusion and dependence on narcotics. About 54 adults in Canadian ICUs will be randomly assigned to receive ketamine or a placebo, and researchers will track their recovery, pain, and side effects.
