Ketamine shows promise for rapidly easing suicidal urges in teens

NCT ID NCT04592809

First seen Jan 08, 2026 · Last updated May 25, 2026 · Updated 22 times

Summary

This study tested whether ketamine, a fast-acting medication, can reduce suicidal thoughts and behaviors in teenagers more quickly than standard treatments. Fifty adolescents aged 13 to 18 who had recently attempted suicide or had strong suicidal thoughts received either ketamine or a comparison drug (midazolam) twice a week for two weeks. Researchers tracked suicidal events like attempts or hospital visits over 12 weeks to see if ketamine offered faster relief.
