New study tests inhaled sedation to reduce lung strain in ICU patients
NCT ID NCT05559970
First seen May 08, 2026 · Last updated May 24, 2026 · Updated 4 times
Summary
This study looked at whether giving sedation through inhalation (breathing it in) instead of through an IV can reduce the work of breathing in patients on ventilators. 40 ICU patients were randomly assigned to receive either inhaled sedation or standard IV sedation. The goal was to see if inhaled sedation could lower 'mechanical power' (a measure of lung stress) and potentially improve outcomes. The study is complete, but results are not yet reported.
