Can inhaled sedatives protect lungs in ICU?
NCT ID NCT05559970
First seen May 08, 2026 ยท Last updated May 08, 2026
Summary
This study looked at whether giving sedation through inhalation (breathing in) instead of standard IV drugs can reduce stress on the lungs in critically ill patients on ventilators. 40 ICU adults on breathing machines were randomly assigned to receive either inhaled sedation or usual IV sedation. The main goal was to measure changes in 'mechanical power' (a measure of lung strain) and other breathing and inflammation markers. The study aims to find better ways to sedate patients that may reduce lung injury and improve recovery.
