Summary
This pilot study tested a program called STEPPT to see if it could reduce ethnic disparities in physical therapy referrals and attendance for spine pain. The program included educating clinic staff, updating electronic health records to automate referrals, and providing patient navigation support. Researchers studied 144 patients and clinic feedback to see if the approach was feasible and acceptable, with the goal of informing a larger future trial.

What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Behavioral intervention: provider education, EHR modifications, and patient health navigation
What this could lead to
If successful, this could point toward a practical way to reduce ethnic disparities in access to physical therapy for spine pain.
What could go wrong
This is a small, completed pilot study at a single clinic, so results may not apply elsewhere. It assesses feasibility, not whether the intervention improves pain outcomes.
