Can a smartphone app help shrink artery plaque? new trial aims to find out

NCT ID NCT07660419

First seen Jun 23, 2026 · Last updated Jun 23, 2026

Summary

This study tests whether a home-based cardiac rehabilitation program delivered through a mobile app can reduce plaque buildup in the coronary arteries. 176 adults with mild to moderate artery narrowing will be randomly assigned to either the mobile rehab program (including exercise plans, nutrition advice, and psychological support) or standard care. The main goal is to see if plaque volume changes after 12 months, with long-term follow-up up to 36 months.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

mHealth-based cardiac rehabilitation program (exercise, nutrition, and psychological support delivered via a mobile app)

What this could lead to

If successful, this could offer an effective, convenient home-based alternative to traditional cardiac rehab for managing coronary artery disease and slowing plaque buildup.

What could go wrong

This is a relatively small, single-center trial testing a behavioral intervention, so results may not apply broadly. The primary outcome is a change in plaque volume measured by imaging, which may not directly translate to fewer heart attacks or better quality of life.
