African trial tests lifesaving combo for vulnerable babies

NCT ID NCT03915366

Summary

This study tested whether adding treatments for tuberculosis (TB) and cytomegalovirus (CMV) to standard pneumonia care improves survival in HIV-infected infants with severe pneumonia. Researchers in six African countries enrolled 563 hospitalized babies aged 1-12 months. Infants were randomly assigned to receive standard care alone, or standard care plus either TB drugs, antiviral medication for CMV, or both, to see which approach worked best.
