First seen May 10, 2026 · Last updated Jun 22, 2026 · Updated 13 times

Summary

This study tests whether high-protein drinks during labor can keep blood sugar in a healthier range for pregnant women with insulin-treated diabetes. Sixty women will be randomly assigned to drink either a high-protein beverage or standard clear liquids every four hours during labor. Participants wear a small glucose sensor to track blood sugar levels continuously.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

High-protein beverage (Genius Gourmet Sparkling Protein Water)

What this could lead to

If it works, this could offer a simple dietary change to help manage blood sugar during labor for women with diabetes.

What could go wrong

This is a small pilot study with only 60 participants, so results may not apply widely. The high-protein drink may not improve blood sugar or could be poorly tolerated during labor.
