Summary

This study tested whether gargling with hawthorn vinegar, black mulberry syrup, or green tea could improve oral health and quality of life in 120 adults with diabetes who had mouth sores (mucositis). Participants used one of the three gargles three times a day for 14 days alongside their usual care. The researchers measured mouth health and quality of life at the start, on day 7, and at day 14.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only, not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance
Hawthorn vinegar, black mulberry syrup, and green tea (used as mouth gargles)
What this could lead to
If effective, these natural gargles could offer a simple, low-cost way to ease mouth soreness and improve quality of life for people with diabetes and oral mucositis.
What could go wrong
This is a small, completed study with no blinding of participants, and the results may not apply to everyone. Natural products can also cause irritation or allergic reactions in some people.
