Can new scans and rapid tests stop antibiotic overuse in hospital pneumonia?

NCT ID NCT05483309

First seen Oct 31, 2025 · Last updated May 24, 2026 · Updated 29 times

Summary

This study looked at whether using CT scans instead of chest X-rays, along with a quick test called the BIOFIRE® FILMARRAY® pneumonia panel (FAPP), can help doctors better diagnose and treat hospital-acquired pneumonia (HAP). HAP is a serious lung infection that can be hard to spot, leading to unnecessary antibiotic use. The goal was to see if these modern tools are practical and cost-effective enough to test in a larger future trial. About 220 adults with suspected HAP took part, and researchers also interviewed patients and staff to improve the study design.
