Hand transplants offer new hope for limb loss patients
NCT ID NCT02310867
First seen Apr 24, 2026 · Last updated May 24, 2026 · Updated 8 times
Summary
This study tests if hand transplantation can help people who have lost a limb below the elbow. Up to 50 participants aged 18-65 will receive a transplant and be followed for 18 months to see how well they can use the new hand in daily activities. The study involves regular check-ups, blood tests, and biopsies, and carries risks like rejection and infection. Because lifelong medication to prevent rejection is needed, this is not a cure but aims to control the condition and improve function.
