Common C-Section drug may not help, study finds
NCT ID NCT05033041
First seen Oct 31, 2025 · Last updated Jun 18, 2026 · Updated 38 times
Summary
This study looked at whether giving metoclopramide before a planned C-section actually lowers stomach fluid, which could help prevent a rare but serious complication called aspiration. Researchers measured stomach volume using ultrasound in 72 healthy pregnant women who had fasted properly. They found that metoclopramide did not significantly reduce stomach fluid compared to a placebo, suggesting the drug may not provide extra benefit in this situation and could cause unnecessary side effects.
