Poop pills could help kids with colitis stay healthy
NCT ID NCT05202990
First seen May 07, 2026 · Last updated Jun 19, 2026 · Updated 7 times
Summary
This study tests whether frozen stool capsules (fecal transplants) can help children aged 8-17 with ulcerative colitis stay in remission. After a colon cleanse and colonoscopy, children will either swallow capsules or receive enemas containing healthy donor stool. The main goal is to see if the treatment increases gut bacteria diversity at 6 months. Only 26 children will take part, and the study is not yet recruiting.

What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) via frozen stool capsules
What this could lead to
If successful, this could offer a simpler, less invasive way to maintain remission in children with ulcerative colitis by restoring healthy gut bacteria.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early-phase study (26 children) focused on bacterial changes, not yet on long-term symptom control. The treatment may not work or could cause side effects like bloating or infection.
