Salt with folic acid could slash birth defect risk in zambia

NCT ID NCT06734611

First seen Nov 01, 2025 · Last updated May 19, 2026 · Updated 25 times

Summary

This study tests whether adding folic acid to iodized salt can raise folate levels in women of childbearing age in Zambia, where food is not fortified with folic acid. About 250 non-pregnant women aged 18-45 will use the special salt for 6 months instead of their regular salt. Researchers will check their blood folate levels four times to see if the salt works. Higher folate levels can help prevent serious birth defects like spina bifida.
