First seen Nov 01, 2025 · Last updated May 09, 2026 · Updated 24 times

Summary

This study tests whether adding folic acid to iodized salt can raise folate levels in women aged 18-45 in Zambia, where food is not fortified with folic acid. About 250 non-pregnant, non-lactating women will use the special salt instead of their regular salt for 6 months and have blood drawn four times. The goal is to see if this simple approach can help prevent neural tube defects in future pregnancies.
