Hospital exercise program may keep seniors on their feet
NCT ID NCT06682598
First seen Jun 24, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study tested whether a daily program of strength, balance, and walking exercises could help older adults (70+) maintain their physical and mental abilities while in the hospital. 47 participants were split into two groups: one did the exercises each day, and the other received usual care. Researchers measured their function and thinking skills at the start and end of their stay, and checked in 3, 6, and 12 months later.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only, not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- multicomponent physical exercise program (strength, balance, and walking exercises)
- What this could lead to
- If it works, this could point toward a simple, drug-free way to help older adults stay stronger and sharper while in the hospital.
- What could go wrong
- This is a small, completed trial with only 47 participants, so results may not apply to everyone. The exercises may be too challenging for some patients.
