Virus tracking in kidney transplants may spot hidden risks

NCT ID NCT04189835

First seen Nov 20, 2025 · Last updated Jun 22, 2026 · Updated 31 times

Summary

This study followed 509 kidney transplant recipients to see if regularly measuring Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) levels in blood could predict serious infections, a type of cancer called PTLD, or death. Researchers compared virus levels in whole blood versus plasma to find the best way to monitor patients. The goal was to learn whether persistent EBV DNA could signal that a patient's immune system is too suppressed, helping doctors personalize treatment in the future.
