Can a simple virus test save transplant patients from cancer?

NCT ID NCT04189835

First seen Nov 20, 2025 · Last updated Jun 12, 2026 · Updated 30 times

Summary

This study followed 509 kidney transplant recipients to see if monitoring Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) levels in blood could help predict serious infections, a type of cancer called PTLD, or death. Participants had regular blood tests for EBV after their transplant. The goal was to find out if high or persistent virus levels signal that the immune system is too suppressed, putting patients at risk. The results may help doctors personalize immunosuppressive treatment to prevent complications.
