Could less radiation be better for some throat cancer patients?

NCT ID NCT03822897

First seen Nov 01, 2025 · Last updated Jun 20, 2026 · Updated 35 times

Summary

This study is testing whether giving less radiation to the lymph nodes can reduce side effects for people with low-risk HPV-related throat cancer. The goal is to see if doctors can safely skip radiation to some lymph node areas without increasing the chance of the cancer coming back. About 100 patients are taking part, and they receive either radiation alone or radiation plus chemotherapy.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

Radiation therapy (with or without cisplatin chemotherapy)

What this could lead to

If successful, this could lead to a standard treatment that reduces side effects for patients with low-risk HPV-related throat cancer, improving quality of life without compromising cancer control.

What could go wrong

This is a phase 2 trial with only 103 participants, so results may not apply to all patients. Reducing radiation might increase the risk of cancer returning in the lymph nodes.

Conditions

The condition(s) this trial relates to.

oropharynx cancer
