New brain bleed surgery within 8 hours could change stroke care

NCT ID NCT04434807

First seen Nov 01, 2025 · Last updated Jun 20, 2026 · Updated 34 times

Summary

This trial tests whether removing a brain clot with a small, minimally invasive surgery within 8 hours of a stroke helps people recover better than standard medical care. About 240 adults with large brain bleeds will be randomly assigned to surgery or standard treatment. The goal is to see if more people can live independently at 6 months.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

Minimally invasive hematoma evacuation using the Aurora surgiscope and evacuator

What this could lead to

If successful, this could offer a safer, more effective way to treat severe brain bleeds, potentially reducing long-term disability.

What could go wrong

This is a mid-stage trial with 240-434 participants, so results are not yet proven. Surgery within 8 hours carries risks like infection or rebleeding, and may not improve outcomes over standard care.

Conditions

The condition(s) this trial relates to.

intracerebral hemorrhage stroke disorder
