Gut health shake tested to boost heart surgery recovery

NCT ID NCT05655910

First seen Oct 31, 2025 · Last updated Jun 22, 2026 · Updated 38 times

Summary

This study is testing whether a special nutrition shake (Ensure Surgery Immunonutrition) can improve gut health and reduce inflammation in heart failure patients awaiting LVAD surgery. Researchers will give the shake to 50 hospitalized patients before their operation and track changes in their gut bacteria, blood markers, and recovery. The goal is to see if better nutrition can lower the risk of infections and shorten hospital stays.

If successful, this could point toward a simple nutritional strategy to improve recovery and reduce complications after LVAD surgery.

What could go wrong

This is a small, early-stage study (50 people) focused on measuring changes in the gut and blood, not on proving a treatment works. The results may not lead to a clear benefit or apply to all patients.
