Can freezing the body buy time to fix fatal bleeding?
NCT ID NCT01042015
First seen Nov 01, 2025 · Last updated Jun 17, 2026 · Updated 26 times
Summary
This study tested a way to rapidly cool people who had a cardiac arrest from severe bleeding after a traumatic injury. The idea was to flush ice-cold salt water into the body to preserve the brain and organs, giving surgeons time to stop the bleeding before slowly rewarming the patient using a heart-lung machine. The study aimed to see if this approach could help people survive without major disability, but it was stopped early after enrolling only 20 participants.
