Could a lung ultrasound replace CT scans for clot detection in the ICU?

NCT ID NCT04047784

First seen May 12, 2026 · Last updated May 21, 2026 · Updated 2 times

Summary

This study looks at whether a tool called endobronchial ultrasound (EBUS) can help diagnose dangerous blood clots in the lungs (pulmonary embolism) in critically ill patients. These patients are often too sick to move for a standard CT scan. The study will enroll 60 adults in the ICU who are on a breathing tube and suspected of having a clot. Researchers will use EBUS to look for clots in the lung's main blood vessels and compare results to CT scans when possible, aiming to see if EBUS is a safe and effective bedside alternative.
