Could a lung ultrasound replace CT scans for clot detection in ICU patients?

NCT ID NCT04047784

First seen May 12, 2026 · Last updated May 14, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study explores whether a tool called endobronchial ultrasound (EBUS) can help diagnose dangerous blood clots in the lungs (pulmonary embolism) in critically ill patients who are too unstable for a CT scan. Researchers will use EBUS, a thin scope passed into the airways, to look for clots in the main lung arteries. The goal is to see if EBUS is a safe and accurate alternative when standard imaging isn't possible. About 60 adults in the intensive care unit will take part.
