Proactive skull surgery may save lives in severe stroke patients

NCT ID NCT07118345

First seen Nov 17, 2025 · Last updated May 24, 2026 · Updated 24 times

Summary

This study tests whether early skull surgery (decompressive hemicraniectomy) can prevent dangerous brain swelling in people who had a severe stroke and already had a clot removal procedure. About 380 participants aged 18-75 with large strokes and high risk of swelling will be randomly assigned to either early surgery or standard care (which may include later rescue surgery). The goal is to see if acting early improves survival and reduces severe disability.
