Can two diabetes pills beat one? new study tests early combo therapy

NCT ID NCT06613854

First seen May 03, 2026 · Last updated May 21, 2026 · Updated 6 times

Summary

This study tests whether starting two diabetes drugs early—metformin plus either oral semaglutide or empagliflozin—works better than metformin alone for controlling blood sugar in people recently diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. About 90 adults with diabetes for up to 2 years will take the assigned pills daily for 26 weeks and wear a continuous glucose monitor. The goal is to see if the combination improves blood sugar levels, weight, and overall health without added safety risks.
