New breathing aid could help tiny preemies avoid ventilator failure
NCT ID NCT05446272
First seen Nov 01, 2025 · Last updated Jun 22, 2026 · Updated 34 times
Summary
This study tests whether a new breathing support method called NIV-NAVA can help very premature infants (born at 23-28 weeks) avoid breathing failure after being taken off a ventilator. About 478 babies will be randomly assigned to receive either NIV-NAVA or standard non-synchronized NIPPV. The main goal is to see if NIV-NAVA reduces the rate of extubation failure within 5 days.

What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Non-invasive neurally adjusted ventilatory assist (NIV-NAVA) device
What this could lead to
If it works, this could reduce breathing failure and lung damage in premature babies after they come off a ventilator.
What could go wrong
This is a single trial, and results may not apply to all hospitals or infants. The new method may not be better than current care and could have unforeseen risks.
Conditions
The condition(s) this trial relates to.
As listed by the trial registrant
The condition terms exactly as the trial's registrant entered them.
