First seen Nov 01, 2025 · Last updated Jun 23, 2026 · Updated 32 times

Summary

This study tests a 'Food is Medicine' program in three Mississippi Delta counties with high rates of diabetes, obesity, and poverty. About 300 adults with high blood sugar or diabetes will receive free fruit and vegetable boxes plus nutrition tips. The goal is to see if this improves blood sugar control and other heart health measures compared to a control group that gets the boxes later.

What this could lead to

If successful, this program could become a model for using food as medicine to manage chronic conditions like diabetes and high blood pressure in underserved communities.

What could go wrong

This is a relatively small, early-stage study in three counties, so results may not apply broadly. The intervention is dietary, so effects may be modest and hard to sustain long-term.
